BERNER OBERLAND - AUGUST 1986

A TOUR IN BEAUTIFUL SWITZERLAND

The Bernese Oberland is one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland and in the Alps! The Interlaken region is wonderful and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains are awesome. Here we'll see mostly a journey towards the Jungfraujoch, said to be the Top of Europe in winter times!! It started and ended at Interlaken and used one of the most famous routes of the unbeatable Swiss Railways: Interlaken Ost - Lauterbrunnen - Wengen - Kleine Scheidegg - Jungfraujoch - Grindelwald - Interlaken Ost!!

"INTERLAKEN - Nestled between Lakes Thun and Brienz at an altitude of 570 metres above sea level and boasting a fantastic view of the Jungfrau Massif, Interlaken is the ideal departure point for a tour of the region. Like Felix Mendelssohn wrote: «If you haven’t seen the Interlaken countryside, you haven’t seen Switzerland»"

"LAUTERBRUNNEN - Famous for its waterfalls and for the huge and much needed parking for all those heading to the car-free villages of Wengen and Mürren..."

"WENGEN - In the fog..."

"WENGENALP - An alpine meadow at an elevation of 1874m"

"KLEINE SCHEIDEGG - Twenty years and twenty pounds less... At least..."

"KLEINE SCHEIDEGG - At an altitude 2061 m, the pass between the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald Valleys, lies directly beneath the trio: Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau"

"JUNGFRAU RAIL - From Kleine Scheidegg the Jungfrau Railway climbs to the station at Eigergletscher and then the trip continues through the Eiger tunnel to the stations at Eigerwand and Eismeer. The large observation windows provide spectacular sightseeing of the solid Alpine rock"

"JUNGFRAUJOCH - At an amazing 3454 metres, this is Europe's highest-altitude railway station! And there one may find the Ice Palace, the Ice Gateway, the Sphinx observation terrace, the Plateau for hikes in the eternal snow, the «Top of Europe» Glacier Restaurant and the High Alpine Research Exhibition..."

"JUNGFRAU - But the best is the mountain!!

"GLACIER - The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region, listed in the UNESCO's World Heritage List, is the most glaciated part of the Alps. Here we find the Aletsch Glacier, Europe’s longest, and a whole range of classic glacial features including U-shaped valleys, glacial basins, horn peaks and moraines"

ST. MORITZ - NOVEMBER 1982

SNOW ON OVERCOAT AND TIE!

The post on Chicago was the last of our first one month trip to North America, in August 1982. In November 82, I had a meeting in Zurich, where I met some colleagues, and we made an escapade to St. Moritz. The funny was to see the tourists among the skiers...

"CHURWALDEN - The departure from Zurich Hauptbahnhof was made very early in the morning, as the trip was long and required some train changes. One of the train stops was made in Churwalden, somehow in the middle between Zurich and St. Moritz"

"ST. MORITZ BAD - The approach showed a nice village by the lake"

"ST. MORITZ is one of the most renowned holiday resorts of the world. Chic, elegant and exclusive (see coats hats and ties...), with a cosmopolitan ambiance, it is situated at 1856 m above sea level, in the Upper Engadine. Though the publicity says the famous sun of St. Moritz shines an average of 322 days a year, we were highly unlucky, as it can be seen from the photos..."

"ST.MORITZ is Switzerland's largest winter sports region, with 350 km of slopes. There are 88 runs and 37 mountain restaurants to choose from"

"CORVIGLIA - Piz Nair is the largest single skiing area in the Engadine. Nearly 100 km of ski slopes wait for you, but not in city attire..."

"PIZ NAIR - 23 lifts in winter take you to the winter sports area, at up to 3057 m above sea level"

"PIZ NAIR - There are also 14 mountain restaurants there. Mathis Food Affairs was one of them"

"FUNICULAR - A nice view on the way down, before the long trip back to Zurich..."

ZURICH, SALZBURG - FEBRUARY 1981

ON THE ROAD TO AN AMAZING LAWYERS' CONFERENCE IN BADGASTEIN, AUSTRIAN ALPS

ZURICH

"GROSSMÜNSTER - You can believe it: Zurich has other buildings besides Banks... In a city of small-scale architecture, the Grossmünster is gigantic. Denuded of all its interior grandeur by Reformers 500 hundred years ago, today its inside is as bare as a cellar"

"FRAUMÜNSTERKIRCHE - Founded in 853 by King Louis the German, this church with ist convent was inhabited by the female members of the aristocracy of southern Germany. Unfortunately the photo doesn't show the magnificent stained glass windows by Marc Chagall: the five-part cycle in the choir (1970) and the rosette in the southern transept (1978); but it shows a «Ushanka» hat..."

"LINDENHOF - An oasis of relaxation in the Zürich old town with a magnificent view of the right bank of the river Limmat. Goethe once stayed at the freemasons'lodge here"

SALZBURG

"THE ALPS are Europe's major range of mountains, spanning from the Mediterranean coast of France via Switzerland, Northern Italy and Austria to Slovenia. Here you can hardly see them, but they are there, as well as Mozart is: Mozart's birthplace, house, photos, chocolates, «kugeln», hotels, records, handkerchiefs, match-boxes, whatever... Now imagine 2006, the 250th Mozart Anniversary! Or better see it at MOZART 2006"

"HOHENSALZBURG - Hohensalzburg Fortress towers high above Salzburg's baroque City. The castle is not baroque but distinctly medieval. Built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, considerably enlarged by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, is the largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe"

"THE CATHEDRAL, as seen from Hohensalzburg; with its magnificent façade and dome is the most impressive early Baroque edifice north of the Alps. The first cathedral dated from 774. Destroyed by fire in 1167, was rebuilt ten years later: more beautiful, more magnificent and more impressive. Destroyed by another fire in 1598, it was rebuilt to be consecrated again in 1628. In 1944 the dome and part of the chancel were destroyed during a bomb attack. Renovations were carried out and the Cathedral consecrated in its former magnificence in 1959. The three years found in the gates to the Cathedral are in memory of the three consecrations: 774, 1628 and 1959"

"VIEWS FROM HOHENSALZBUG FORTRESS, a fabulous view point to the City, the River Salzach and the Alps"

"PFERDESCHWEMME - Through Salzburg's Old Town; by 'Fiaker' horse cabs, bike, car or better on foot!"

"MIRABELL GARDENS - Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf von Thun (1687 - 1709) had the famous Mirabell Gardens remodelled in 1690. They were redesigned around 1730 by Franz Anton Danreiter. In 1854 Emperor Franz Joseph opened the Mirabell Gardens to the public"
