ZURICH, SALZBURG - FEBRUARY 1981

ON THE ROAD TO AN AMAZING LAWYERS' CONFERENCE IN BADGASTEIN, AUSTRIAN ALPS

ZURICH

"GROSSMÜNSTER - You can believe it: Zurich has other buildings besides Banks... In a city of small-scale architecture, the Grossmünster is gigantic. Denuded of all its interior grandeur by Reformers 500 hundred years ago, today its inside is as bare as a cellar"

"FRAUMÜNSTERKIRCHE - Founded in 853 by King Louis the German, this church with ist convent was inhabited by the female members of the aristocracy of southern Germany. Unfortunately the photo doesn't show the magnificent stained glass windows by Marc Chagall: the five-part cycle in the choir (1970) and the rosette in the southern transept (1978); but it shows a «Ushanka» hat..."

"LINDENHOF - An oasis of relaxation in the Zürich old town with a magnificent view of the right bank of the river Limmat. Goethe once stayed at the freemasons'lodge here"

SALZBURG

"THE ALPS are Europe's major range of mountains, spanning from the Mediterranean coast of France via Switzerland, Northern Italy and Austria to Slovenia. Here you can hardly see them, but they are there, as well as Mozart is: Mozart's birthplace, house, photos, chocolates, «kugeln», hotels, records, handkerchiefs, match-boxes, whatever... Now imagine 2006, the 250th Mozart Anniversary! Or better see it at MOZART 2006"

"HOHENSALZBURG - Hohensalzburg Fortress towers high above Salzburg's baroque City. The castle is not baroque but distinctly medieval. Built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, considerably enlarged by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach, is the largest, fully-preserved fortress in central Europe"

"THE CATHEDRAL, as seen from Hohensalzburg; with its magnificent façade and dome is the most impressive early Baroque edifice north of the Alps. The first cathedral dated from 774. Destroyed by fire in 1167, was rebuilt ten years later: more beautiful, more magnificent and more impressive. Destroyed by another fire in 1598, it was rebuilt to be consecrated again in 1628. In 1944 the dome and part of the chancel were destroyed during a bomb attack. Renovations were carried out and the Cathedral consecrated in its former magnificence in 1959. The three years found in the gates to the Cathedral are in memory of the three consecrations: 774, 1628 and 1959"

"VIEWS FROM HOHENSALZBUG FORTRESS, a fabulous view point to the City, the River Salzach and the Alps"

"PFERDESCHWEMME - Through Salzburg's Old Town; by 'Fiaker' horse cabs, bike, car or better on foot!"

"MIRABELL GARDENS - Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf von Thun (1687 - 1709) had the famous Mirabell Gardens remodelled in 1690. They were redesigned around 1730 by Franz Anton Danreiter. In 1854 Emperor Franz Joseph opened the Mirabell Gardens to the public"

Hi Andrea,
I can imagine that... Sometimes I bought one of those one time use cameras: that's why some of the old scanned pictures are so lousy...
